Funerals

The loss of a loved one can be a very difficult time. For many people, the prospect of preparing for a funeral can be sad and overwhelming, even when a death is expected. Despite the sadness, it can also be an opportunity to celebrate the life of the person you have lost, sharing fond memories of happy times.

My role as a celebrant includes the following:

  • Initial contact with you by telephone
  • A face-to-face meeting to discuss and plan the funeral ceremony.
  • Writing the eulogy for you, or supporting you or a family member to write it
  • Sourcing readings, poems or music, should you require help with choosing something appropriate.
  • Ensuring you see and approve the wording prior to the ceremony.
  •  Officiating the ceremony on the day.
  • Support you in liaising with your chosen funeral director.

Meeting with you allows me to learn more about the person you have lost and ensure that the ceremony I prepare reflects the life they lived and what they meant to those they leave behind. You may wish to prepare for the meeting by having some photographs of the person so that I can picture who they were in life and by writing down some of the details that you feel are important to capture during the ceremony. This can include details of when they were born, family and working life, hobbies, any special achievements

or things people attending may wish to know. The meeting usually takes 60-90 minutes and can take place in  mutually convenient location. It is often helpful to nominate someone as the key contact for me to simplify communication.  I look forward to meeting you. I am dedicated to creating a farewell ceremony that meets your personal and family needs, honouring your loved one’s life.

Baby Loss and Children’s Funerals

If you are a grieving parent, the circumstances of your loss and preparation for a funeral may be altogether different than those described above.  With my experience as a neonatal and children’s nurse, I can assist in preparing for a ceremony tailored to your specific needs. Together we can ensure that you celebrate the love you will always have for your precious child and say goodbye in a way that feels right for you and your family.

Memorial Services

With an increasing trend in direct cremations without a service, some families have opted to have a memorial service later, perhaps on a special anniversary. It may be that at the time of the death things were too raw, or circumstances did not allow every person that wanted to, to attend. I am happy to craft and conduct memorial services to allow friends and loved ones to remember with fondness the person they have lost. If you feel you would like to know more, please contact me to arrange a meeting to discuss what you need.
